Proud Paints expert help and advice painting your staircase advice and steps to painting your homes interior choosing paint colours from Proud Paints confident colour collection will bring your home to life

Helpful tips for giving your staircase a new lease of life

  1. Using a good cleaning solution such as sugar soap, wipe down the handrail and spindles cleaning away any dirt and dust.
  2. Using dust sheets and masking tape. Place the dust sheets onto your carpet or flooring of the stairs and tape the sides down, this protects the flooring from paint splashes.
  3. Sanding- using a fine sanding block or pad, gently sand down the staircase, rail & spindles, also filling in any dents, and sand, when finished wipe down with a damp cloth, removing any dust.Tip- If painting over painted surfaces, then use a fine or medium grit sandpaper. Also using an angled sanding block will allow you to get into any hard to reach areas.
  4. Priming is key and will ensure better adhesion when using Proud® Paints Satin or Gloss Finish. Proud Paints Multi Surface Primer will do a perfect job. Apply 1 to 2 thin coats with a brush & 4” rad roller 5mm nap for a smooth lay off. Allowing 2-4hrs drying time between coats.
  5. Once primer is completely dry, apply two coats of Proud® Eggshell, Satin or Gloss finish. If all woodwork is going the same colour, start by painting at the top of the staircase, working your way down. Making sure to layoff in the same direction. Using a good quality brush and 5mm rad roller sleeve, this will help you achieve, a professional finish.
  6. If you are painting the hand rail and spindles two different colours, paint the spindles first, with the paint colour of your choice and allow to fully dry, separating the different areas with masking tape will help you achieve a professional finish.
  7. Apply thin coats until the desired coverage is achieved. Don’t rush coats, allow time to dry in-between. This will prevent paint from lifting and dripping where not wanted.
  8. Step back and admire your beautiful new staircase.
